Basis found in many languages for grouping of words into different classes, for example into masculine, feminine or neuter. This classification need not depend on whether the referent itself is masculine or feminine etc.
Example:The German word for 'shoe' is masculine (der Schuh), but the word for 'jacket' is feminine (die Jacke) and the word for 'shirt' is neuter (das Hemd).
