As noted in the textbook, what researchers have found is that the backwards version of the guessing game task is also a good indicator of predictability, though not as good as the forward version. This again reflects the fact that there are local levels of organisation, and that these are in a hierarchical structure (phrases within clauses, clauses within sentences) rather than in a simple linear structure.
