If the study mentioned in the textbook is right, then you should find that the rate of palatalisation (or flapping, if you chose to look at that) is influenced by the frequency of the word after the location of possible palatalisation (or flapping), rather than by that of the word before. You might want to think of other likely influences, such as how likely the combination of words across the palatalisation site is (i.e. if the second word is highly predictable then the 'clarity' of the beginning consonant may not be so important and so palatalisation may be more likely).
