diphone
Sequence of two sounds, importantly capturing the transitions from one sound to the next. Often used to create more natural sounding speech synthesis. Important in some models of word recognition.

Example:
The word cat consists of diphones from silence to /k/, from /k/ to /æ/, from /æ/ to /t/, and from /t/ to silence.
