formant
Perceptually important frequency in speech (especially with regard to the identification of vowels), resulting from how the configuration of the vocal tract (throat, mouth, nasal cavity) causes some sound frequencies to resonate more than others.

Example:
The main factors contributing to the perception of different vowel sounds are their first two formant frequencies (F1 and F2). Thus the /i/ sound in feet has a low F1 and a high F2, compared with which the /o/ sound in thought has a higher F1 and lower F2.
