cue trading
In cases where multiple cues are used to identify, e.g., a phoneme, it is sometimes the case that strong evidence from one cue will make the listener less dependent on other cues.

Example:
In identifying /p/, if the listener hears particularly strong aspiration, s/he may not need to pay as much attention to the voice onset time to correctly identify the sound as /p/.
