phonetic feature
Important characteristic of a speech sound. It can help define a sound, distinguish it from other sounds, and place it into a group that shares the same feature.

Example:
E.g. voicing is a phonetic feature that distinguishes /b/ (voiced) and /p/ (voiceless). /p, t, k, s, f/ and other sounds all share the feature 'voiceless'.
