vowel harmony
Agreement in the properties of vowels, as found in some languages between the vowels of word stems and the vowels of affixes added to those stems. E.g. an affix might have a form with a front vowel if the stem has a front vowel, but an alternative form with a back vowel if the stem has a back vowel.

Example:
So in Turkish, the ending showing plural takes a front or back vowel depending on which type of vowel is in the stem that it is attached to: kül (ash) -> küller (ashes); kas (muscle) -> kaslar (muscles)
