Zipf's law
Tendency for the most frequent words to be short.

Example:
In the Wellington Spoken Corpus the ten most frequent words in order are:
the, and, I, to, a, you, that, it, of, yeah.
Two of these words comprise only one phoneme; six have two phonemes; and two are three phonemes long (though and is usually reduced to the two phoneme an or one phoneme n in speech).
