consistency Extent to which a spelling pattern has a predictable pronunciation across a set of words, regardless of whether that relationship follows the regular rules for the language.
Example:The <-aze> spelling in gaze is both regular and consistent in terms of how it will be pronounced. The <-ook> spelling in look, book, took, etc. is consistent but irregular (the pronunciation following rules for <-oo-> spellings would be as in spook).
