derivation (syntax)
Process by which an underlying or logical form of a sentence is changed into the surface form that we speak or read

Example:
It has been argued that the logical form resembles an active declarative sentence like The dog chases the cat, and that passive forms like The cat is chased by the dog have to be arrived at by transformations. See deep structure,surface structure and Derivational Theory of Complexity
