subordinate clause
Clause that is dependent on or modifies an element of a main clause.

Example:
Subordinate clauses have a number of functions, e.g. the subject of a verb: That his car had broken down was obvious, the object of a verb: We knew that his car had broken down, the modifier of a noun (a relative clause): The car that had broken down could not be repaired.
