inference
Connection made to something assumed to be the case even though it might not be explicitly stated in the discourse. E.g. it might be inferred from the use of the verb drive that a vehicle of some sort is involved.

Example:
In the sequence below it can be inferred that it is Philip, not the old woman who is running. This can be tested by seeing how quickly participants respond to HER versus HIM at the point where the sentence breaks off:
As Philip was walking back from the shop, he saw an old woman trip and fall flat on her face in the street. She seemed unable to get up. Running towards ...
