instrumentality
Idea that speakers choose to express information that is vital to their communicative intention, and do not explicitly express information that they can assume the listener will infer.

Example:
The utterance Drive along Hanson Street and turn right at the church assumes the listener doesn't need to be told to brake, change down a gear, turn the steering wheel, etc.
