aspiration Puff of air that is produced during articulation of plosive consonants (especially voiceless), at the moment when the closure is released.
Example:The realisation of /p/ in paw is likely to be the aspirated allophone. Compare the puff of air you feel on your hand if you hold it in front of your mouth as you say paw and spore. The first /p/ is aspirated the second is unaspirated.
